7 things you do every morning that are ageing your skin without you knowing
Your morning routine might be doing more harm than good. Here are the habits to drop immediately.
The over-aggressive cleanse
Most people wash their face with too much pressure and products that are far too stripping. The result: the hydrolipidic film — the natural barrier protecting the skin — is destroyed twice a day. The skin compensates by producing more sebum, which causes the enlarged pores and breakouts you were not supposed to have past the age of 25.
The step nobody questions: your soap
Everyone talks about serums and creams. Nobody talks about soap. Yet it is the first thing your skin touches in your routine. A liquid soap in a plastic bottle bought at the supermarket can contain aggressive sulphates, irritating preservatives and synthetic fragrances that weaken the skin barrier before you have applied anything else. Choosing a gentler soap, stored in a refillable glass dispenser like those from Kuishi, also means the formula is not being contaminated by the container it sits in.
The shared towel, a bacteria farm
A bathroom towel used several days in a row by several people accumulates bacteria, dead cells and residual moisture. These end up directly on your freshly cleansed skin. The fix is simple: a personal towel, washed frequently, or even better, a fresh soft cloth changed daily.
Applying moisturiser on dry skin
Most moisturisers work better on slightly damp skin. Applying your cream several minutes after washing your face significantly reduces the product effectiveness. The ideal window is within 60 seconds of cleansing, when the skin is still slightly humid and therefore more receptive to actives.
Forgetting the neck and chest
The skin on the neck ages faster than the face because it is often left out of the skincare routine. Exposed to sun, heat and friction, it develops horizontal lines and loses elasticity earlier than expected. Bringing your routine down to the collarbone costs exactly zero extra effort.
SPF: the only real anti-ageing ingredient that exists
All anti-ageing actives combined do not have the proven efficacy of a good SPF applied every morning. UVA rays go through windows, clouds, and are present even on overcast days. Without daily sun protection, all the serums and creams in the world cannot counteract the damage the sun accumulates week after week.
The screen that blue-lights your skin while you sleep
Looking at your phone in the last minutes before falling asleep disrupts the melatonin cycle and reduces the quality of the restorative sleep during which skin regenerates. The skin renews itself mainly between 11pm and 4am. What you do before bed matters as much as what you apply on it.
