Serums & Essences: understand before you choose

Serums and essences are the treatment step in Korean skincare. Essences are lighter and used before serums; serums carry higher concentrations of active ingredients. Both are optional but high-impact when targeted correctly.

The difference between essence and serum

Essences are water-thin fluids applied after cleansing to prep skin for the next steps. Serums are heavier, more concentrated and address specific concerns: vitamin C for brightness, niacinamide for pores and tone, hyaluronic acid for hydration, peptides for elasticity.

Active ingredients worth knowing

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces pore appearance, regulates sebum and brightens uneven tone. Vitamin C targets dark spots and collagen synthesis. Hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin. Peptides signal cells to produce more collagen and elastin.

Frequently asked questions about serums & essences

Do I need both an essence and a serum?

No. An essence alone can be the entire treatment step for simple routines. A serum alone is enough if it addresses your specific concern.

Is niacinamide good for every skin type?

Generally yes. Niacinamide at 5-10% is well tolerated across skin types and addresses multiple concerns: pores, tone, oiliness, sensitivity.

When is the best time to apply vitamin C serum?

Morning, after cleansing and before moisturiser and sunscreen. Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection against UV damage — combining it with SPF is more protective than either alone.
