Why the second-cleanse pH affects serum absorption
The skin's natural pH is mildly acidic — between 4.5 and 5.5 — a range that supports the skin's own microbiome, barrier enzyme activity and resistance to pathogens. Most gel and foam cleansers have a pH between 5.5 and 7, which is acceptable. However, many traditional bar soaps and some commercial foaming cleansers reach pH 8 to 10 — alkaline enough to disrupt the skin's acid mantle. A second-step cleanser that maintains skin's natural pH should be pH 5.5 or below (some brands print pH on packaging; most do not, but avoiding sulphate-heavy formulas and soaps is the practical shortcut). K-beauty second-step cleansers are typically gel or foam formulas with amino acid or glucoside-based surfactants — gentler than sulphates, effective at cleansing, and pH-balanced. A cleaner that leaves skin feeling "tight" after use has disrupted the acid mantle; one that leaves skin feeling "soft and ready" has maintained it.
One-step cleansers for morning and non-SPF days
For morning routines (when there is no makeup or heavy SPF to remove) or on non-SPF days, a single water-based gel cleanser covers both cleansing needs in one step.
