Face cleansers: understand before you choose

Face cleansers are the foundation of any skincare routine. The K-beauty double-cleanse approach — oil or balm first, then a gentle foam or gel — is the most effective method for removing sunscreen, makeup and daily pollution.

The double-cleanse explained

The first cleanse uses an oil-based product to dissolve sunscreen and makeup. The second uses a water-based cleanser to clean the skin itself. This two-step process is gentler than one heavy cleansing step and does not compromise the skin barrier.

Choosing a cleanser for your skin type

Oily skin benefits from gel or foam cleansers that remove excess sebum without stripping. Dry and sensitive skin does better with cream or milk cleansers that maintain the lipid barrier. Combination skin usually works with a gentle gel on the T-zone and a milder formula elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions about face cleansers

Should I double-cleanse if I do not wear makeup?

If you wear SPF50 daily — which you should — yes. Oil-based cleansers remove sunscreen significantly more effectively than water-based products alone.

Is foaming cleanser bad for the skin?

Foaming cleansers are not inherently damaging. The issue is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in high concentrations. Gentle low-sulfate or sulfate-free foaming formulas are effective for most skin types.

How many times a day should I cleanse?

Twice a day for most skin types: morning and evening. Over-cleansing removes sebum that the skin needs and triggers more sebum production.
