What bees make for their own protection — and why it became a K-beauty skincare breakthrough

Propolis is the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory compound bees produce to seal and protect their hive. In skincare, its complex of flavonoids and phenolic acids delivers a uniquely complete calming and glow package.

Propolis: the bee compound with an unusually broad skincare action profile

Propolis is produced by honey bees from plant resins, beeswax and bee enzymes to seal and sterilise the hive. Its composition — primarily flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin), phenolic acids (caffeic acid, ferulic acid) and terpenoids — gives it an unusually broad biological action profile: antimicrobial (inhibiting gram-positive bacteria including C. acnes), anti-inflammatory (reducing inflammatory cytokine production), antioxidant (neutralising free radicals from UV and pollution), and wound-healing (stimulating fibroblast activity in the dermis). No single synthetic compound achieves all four of these functions simultaneously.

Panthenol B5 as the propolis partner: what it adds to the barrier formula

Panthenol (provitamin B5) transforms rapidly into pantothenic acid in the skin, where it serves as a coenzyme in the fatty acid synthesis pathways that produce ceramides and other barrier lipids. This is why panthenol is effective at barrier repair at the biochemical level — it provides the raw material for the skin's own lipid synthesis rather than just depositing external lipids on the surface. Paired with propolis (which calms inflammation and inhibits bacteria), panthenol creates a two-mechanism formula: propolis manages the microbiological and inflammatory causes of barrier compromise, panthenol supports the biochemical repair of the barrier from within.

Propolis and B5 serum in the K-beauty layering routine

A propolis B5 glow serum sits in the treatment serum position in the K-beauty layering sequence: after the first-step toner and before the moisturiser. Its calming and brightening properties make it appropriate for both morning and evening use. For morning use, it is applied before SPF to provide antioxidant protection from the propolis flavonoid complex against UV-generated free radicals. For evening use, it is the calming and repair-active step before a barrier cream or sleeping mask. Because propolis is naturally golden-amber in colour, some formulas have a slight yellow tint that fades immediately on absorption.
