A standard single-sheet mask carries its entire active payload within the sheet's saturating essence, which the skin absorbs gradually over the mask's wear time — but very high concentrations of certain actives can be difficult to stabilise within a sheet's saturation alone, and some actives benefit from more direct, concentrated initial contact than a diffuse sheet-essence delivery provides.

How splitting the treatment into a pre-step ampoule and a sheet step solves this

Applying a concentrated treatment ampoule directly to skin first delivers a more potent initial dose of the active ingredient than relying on the sheet to do all the work, while the sheet mask that follows then works to drive that ampoule deeper into skin and add its own additional saturating benefit — essentially treating the two-step format as a concentrated dose followed by a sustained-delivery booster, rather than one undifferentiated step.

Using a two-step mask correctly to get the benefit of both phases

Apply the ampoule first to clean, dry skin and allow a minute or two for initial absorption before placing the sheet — don't skip straight to the sheet, which defeats the purpose of the concentrated first step. Leave the sheet on for the full recommended time, then pat in any remaining ampoule or sheet essence rather than rinsing. Reserve this more intensive two-step format for occasional treatment use — once or twice weekly — rather than as a daily-mask replacement.
