The second cleanse in a K-beauty double cleanse — and why the choice of foam determines how much damage you avoid

In a K-beauty double cleanse, the first cleanse removes surface debris — but the second cleanse determines barrier state for the rest of the routine. Choosing the wrong second cleanser undoes the entire benefit of the K-beauty routine that follows.

Why the second cleanser in a double cleanse is the more important product choice

The first cleanser in a K-beauty double cleanse is an oil-based product (balm, cleansing oil, micellar oil) whose sole function is to dissolve and remove oil-soluble debris: SPF, makeup, sebum oxidation products, environmental particulates. Any oil-based cleanser performs this function adequately — the product choice matters less. The second cleanser is the one that determines the skin's post-cleanse state — its pH, residual moisture level, and whether the stratum corneum is intact or partially stripped. A second cleanser with harsh sulfate surfactants at the wrong pH will leave the skin barrier compromised going into the rest of the routine, reducing the penetration quality and tolerability of every product that follows. A gentle, low-pH, active-ingredient-supplemented second cleanser sets up the entire routine for maximum efficacy.

Low-pH foam cleansers in K-beauty: the pH management principle

Healthy skin surface pH ranges from 4.5 to 5.5. Most traditional foam cleansers (soap-based or SLES-based) produce a temporary pH elevation to 7 to 9 during cleansing, requiring 15 to 30 minutes of recovery time before the skin reaches its natural acidic state again. K-beauty low-pH cleansers maintain the wash pH between 5 and 6 — close to the skin's natural pH — minimising the disruption to the acid mantle and the tight junctions in the stratum corneum that pH elevation temporarily compromises. A rice-based foam cleanser with fermented rice extract provides the additional benefit of gentle brightening actives (ferulic acid, kojic acid precursors) during the second cleanse step, enhancing the routine without adding an additional product.

Hanyul Rice Foam as the second cleanse step in a brightening double-cleanse routine

Evening double cleanse protocol: first cleanse with BOJ cleansing oil or balm (removes SPF and makeup thoroughly). Second cleanse with Hanyul Rice Pure Brightening Foam (low-pH gentle cleanse that adds fermented rice brightening actives during the wash step). Apply the foam to damp skin (not dry — foam cleansers work at correct pH dilution, not dry contact), massage for 30 to 60 seconds, rinse thoroughly. Apply first-step toner immediately after while skin is still damp. This protocol achieves the double cleanse objective (thorough but gentle cleansing) while adding a brightening treatment at the cleansing step without an additional product.
