The most common skincare advice about pores is wrong — understanding the actual biology opens up a more effective approach to managing their appearance.
The pore biology that makes most advice useless
Pores do not have muscles and cannot open or close in response to temperature. Hot water does not open pores and cold water does not close them — the appearance of enlarged pores is determined by sebum production, collagen density around the pore opening, and the accumulation of oxidised debris in the pore canal. Steam temporarily softens the debris, which can make extraction easier, but it has no lasting effect on pore size. The permanent changes to pore appearance come from three mechanisms: reducing sebum (which reduces the hydraulic pressure that stretches the pore canal), stimulating collagen around the pore opening (which firms the surrounding tissue), and regular removal of oxidised sebum from the canal surface.
The serum for visible pore reduction
Medicube Zero Pore Serum addresses the sebum-reduction and collagen-stimulation mechanisms simultaneously. Niacinamide reduces sebum production by downregulating the activity of sebaceous glands, while the peptide complex in the formula signals collagen synthesis around the pore opening over four to six weeks. This is a gradual mechanism — pore appearance changes are not dramatic after the first use, but consistent daily application produces measurable results in pore visibility and skin surface texture that most single-ingredient formulas cannot achieve alone. Apply it before moisturiser on cleansed, toned skin, focusing on the T-zone where sebaceous glands are largest and most numerous.
Mugwort for congestion and deep cleansing
AXIS-Y Mugwort Pore Clarifying Wash-Off Pack addresses the third mechanism: removing oxidised sebum from the pore canal surface. Mugwort (artemisia) has traditional use in Korean medicine as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, and in modern skincare formulas it provides both gentle antiseptic action and sebum-absorbing clays. Used twice weekly after cleansing, the pack removes the surface oxidation that makes pores appear darker and more prominent — clearing this debris also means the niacinamide serum can penetrate more effectively in subsequent applications. The wash-off format is gentler on the barrier than pore strips, which can damage capillaries and worsen long-term pore appearance.
The toner that prepares and maintains
AXIS-Y Daily Purifying Treatment Toner includes BHA (salicylic acid) and niacinamide in a daily-use formula calibrated to work without the irritation of dedicated exfoliant products. BHA is oil-soluble and penetrates the pore canal to dissolve the oxidised sebum that makes pores visible, while niacinamide in the toner provides a daily dose of the sebum-regulation and collagen-stimulation benefits. Used as a morning toner after cleansing, it maintains the pore clarification achieved by the wash-off pack between sessions and delivers a consistent daily dose of the actives that the serum provides at a higher concentration. The sequence — morning toner, daily serum, twice-weekly wash-off pack — covers all three pore mechanisms consistently.
