Why Korean high-beauty brands put their most precious ingredients in the cleanser — and the science that justifies it

The investment in active ingredients in premium Korean cleansing oil is not a marketing indulgence — short-contact actives in a rinse-off format do deliver clinically meaningful benefit, particularly at the oil-cleanse step where skin contact is longest.

Contact time at the oil cleanse step: why active ingredients in cleansing oil have more time than in rinse-off cleanser

Oil-based first-step cleansers require a longer contact time than foam second cleansers: the oil dissolve-and-emulsify mechanism needs one to two minutes of massage contact on dry skin to fully dissolve makeup, SPF and sebum oxidation products. During this one to two minutes of dry skin massage, oil-soluble actives in the cleansing oil (carotenoids, fat-soluble vitamins, polyphenol esters, ginsenoside lipophilic derivatives) have direct contact with the skin without the dilution factor that water-rinse timing creates. This gives oil-phase actives in a cleansing oil significantly more effective contact time than the same actives in a rinse-off foam cleanser — making the cleansing oil step the most rational format for delivering fat-soluble anti-aging actives in a rinse-off product.

Ginseng root in cleansing oil: the lipophilic ginsenoside delivery advantage

BOJ's ginseng cleansing oil uses the lipophilic (fat-soluble) ginsenoside profile of red ginseng root extract — the ginsenoside derivatives that dissolve in the oil phase of the cleansing formula. Lipophilic ginsenosides penetrate the stratum corneum through the intercellular lipid pathway more effectively than their hydrophilic counterparts, making the oil-phase delivery in a cleansing oil a pharmacologically rational route for ginsenoside skin penetration. The daily massage contact during oil cleansing also provides a micro-stimulation of the dermal microcirculation (increasing blood flow to the upper dermis), which amplifies the effect of any skin-penetrating actives by improving the nutrient and oxygen environment in the upper dermis during the active contact period.

BOJ Ginseng Cleansing Oil in a luxury K-beauty anti-aging double cleanse

Premium double cleanse protocol with ginseng: First cleanse — BOJ Ginseng Cleansing Oil on dry face and neck. Massage for one to two minutes (the full product contact time for both cleansing efficacy and ginseng active delivery). Add water to emulsify; the oil becomes a milky emulsion. Rinse thoroughly. Second cleanse — Hanyul Rice brightening foam or Klairs gentle foam cleanser. This protocol delivers ginseng actives at the first cleanse step before any other products — ensuring the anti-aging active is applied to the cleanest skin surface in the routine, without interference from previously-applied products. For skin-active delivery purposes, the first-cleanse step on dry skin is the highest-contact-time moment of any K-beauty routine.
