Why sensitive skin needs a different kind of SPF — and what centella adds to sun protection

For skin that reddens, stings or reacts to most sunscreens, centella-infused SPF formulas combine broad-spectrum protection with active calming — addressing the sun sensitivity and the skin sensitivity simultaneously.

Why some skin types react to standard sunscreens

Chemical UV filters — the active ingredients in most modern lightweight sunscreens — work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat. For sensitised or reactive skin, this heat generation on the skin surface can trigger flushing, redness and stinging. Certain chemical filters (particularly oxybenzone and PABA) are also known contact sensitisers. The K-beauty response to this problem was to develop SPF formulas specifically for reactive skin — using gentler filter combinations (zinc oxide, tinosorb, uvinul) and adding soothing botanicals to counteract any residual reactive potential.

Centella asiatica in SPF: what the calming compound adds to sun protection

Centella asiatica (cica) contains triterpenoids — particularly asiaticoside and madecassoside — with established anti-inflammatory and barrier-supporting properties. In a centella-infused SPF, these compounds serve two functions in addition to the sun protection: they reduce the inflammatory response that sun exposure triggers in reactive skin (independent of UV filter activity), and they support barrier integrity throughout the day, counteracting the barrier-disrupting effect of prolonged sun exposure. The result is a sunscreen that actively calms while it protects.

Building the sensitive skin summer routine around a centella SPF

For sensitive or redness-prone skin in summer: cleanse → gentle centella toner (soothing first step) → centella serum or simple hydrating serum → centella SPF50+ (final step before going outside). The repeated centella exposure throughout the routine creates a cumulative calming and anti-inflammatory effect throughout the day. Reapply the centella SPF every two hours during outdoor exposure — choosing the same formula for reapplication ensures no compatibility issues with the morning application. Carry a centella mist for midday calming between SPF reapplications.
