Why the cleansing step is where sensitive skin routines most often go wrong
For reactive or sensitised skin, the choice of first-cleanse product has a greater impact on the rest of the routine than almost any other decision — and centella-infused oils changed what was possible.
How the cleansing step triggers sensitivity in reactive skin
Reactive skin is often sensitised at the first step of the routine — the cleanse — before any active serum or treatment is applied. Fragranced cleansing oils, high-concentration emulsifier systems (particularly PEG-based) and cleansing balms with heavy botanical extracts can trigger a redness response before the skin has even encountered the serums being blamed. For reactive skin, the first-cleanse product must be fragrance-free, with a simple, low-irritation emulsifier system and ideally a calming botanical to reduce any residual reactivity from the cleansing contact.
Centella asiatica in a cleansing oil: soothing during the most vulnerable step
Centella asiatica extract in a first-step cleansing oil provides anti-inflammatory action during the moment when reactive skin is at its most vulnerable — during the cleansing massage when the surface barrier is being mechanically and chemically challenged. The triterpenoids in centella extract begin working at first contact, reducing the inflammatory cascade that gentle cleansing can still trigger in sensitised skin. For skin that consistently becomes red or tight after cleansing, switching to a centella-infused oil cleanser is one of the fastest-impact adjustments available.
Pairing centella oil with a gentle second-cleanse for maximum soothing
The most effective double-cleanse protocol for sensitive skin pairs a centella cleansing oil (first step) with a gentle, pH-balanced foam or gel cleanser (second step) — ideally also fragrance-free. This combination removes all SPF and makeup residue (oil step) and then cleanses the emulsified residue without stripping (foam step), leaving the skin in a calm, balanced state ready for actives. Avoiding sulphate-heavy foams in the second step maintains this calm — sulphates disrupt the acid mantle and can reverse the soothing achieved by the centella oil first step.
