Why combining antioxidants with UV filters in a sunscreen produces better photoprotection than SPF alone
UV filters block UV radiation from reaching the skin. Antioxidants in a sunscreen formula address the reactive oxygen species that UV exposure generates even through an SPF barrier — the two mechanisms are complementary rather than redundant.
What UV filters do — and what they do not do
UV filters prevent UV radiation from reaching the skin cells where it would cause direct DNA damage, trigger melanin production, and stimulate the inflammatory cascade. An SPF 50 product applied at full quantity reduces UVB transmission by 98%. However, UV radiation is not the only source of oxidative stress from sun exposure: visible light (HEV, specifically in the blue range) and infrared radiation both generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in skin tissue, and even the small fraction of UV that penetrates through SPF protection generates ROS at the molecular level. UV filters do not address these ROS directly.
What antioxidants add to UV protection — specifically addressing oxidative stress
Topical antioxidants — vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, polyphenols, camellia extract's catechin content — neutralise the reactive oxygen species generated by light exposure before they can cause oxidative damage to DNA, proteins and lipids in the skin. This is a different mechanism from UV filtering: the antioxidant is not preventing the radiation from reaching the skin, it is preventing the oxidative damage that the radiation generates once it arrives. The combination of UV filtering and antioxidant protection covers both the direct radiation damage and the downstream oxidative damage.
Why camellia extract is particularly appropriate in a sunscreen context
Camellia sinensis (green tea) and Camellia japonica both contain catechins — polyphenol antioxidants with strong ROS-quenching activity. Camellia catechins have also been shown to have mild photoprotective properties in their own right, providing some UV absorption that complements rather than replaces UV filters. In a sunscreen formula, camellia extract addresses both the ROS generated by UV penetration through the SPF barrier and the ROS generated by visible light, which UV filters do not protect against.
Building complete photoprotection that goes beyond SPF number
The most complete daily photoprotection combines a well-applied high-SPF formula with a meaningful antioxidant layer — either from a dedicated antioxidant serum applied before sunscreen, or from a sunscreen that includes antioxidant compounds in its formulation. A camellia-based sunscreen addresses both dimensions in a single product. For maximum antioxidant benefit, a vitamin C serum applied under the camellia sunscreen creates two complementary antioxidant layers that address ROS at different molecular targets.
